CASE STUDY: ST ATHAN AIRSIDE FENCING PROJECT

Client: Welsh Government Contractor: Ridgeway Contractors Ltd Location: St Athan Air Base (formerly RAF St Athan), Wales Project Scope: Security Fencing Installation

Project Overview

Ridgeway Contractors Ltd successfully tendered for and executed a high-security fencing project at St Athan Air Base on behalf of the Welsh Government. The project aimed to enhance the security perimeter of the airside facility, ensuring controlled access while maintaining safety and operational efficiency. Given the nature of the site, all works were carried out under live runway conditions, requiring strict adherence to aviation safety protocols.

SCOPE OF WORKS

The project involved the supply and installation of approximately 3,000 meters of 2.4-meter-high V mesh security fencing, mounted on cranked posts with an additional three strands of barbed wire for enhanced perimeter security. To facilitate access control and operational flexibility, Ridgeway Contractors Ltd also installed:
10 pairs of double-leaf security gates to match the fencing specification.
Two pairs of cantilever sliding gates, designed for ease of use and durability in a high-security environment.
Additionally, extensive site preparation was required, including:
Vegetation and tree clearance to prepare the ground for fence installation.
Excavation and off-site removal of approximately 2,500 tons of spoil, ensuring a stable and secure foundation for the fencing system.

CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS

One of the most significant challenges faced during the project was executing the works while the airbase remained operational. With aircraft landing and taking off in close proximity, Ridgeway Contractors Ltd implemented stringent safety measures, including:
Coordinated work schedules to minimise disruptions to air traffic operations.
Close collaboration with airbase authorities and adherence to strict aviation security protocols.
The use of specialised equipment and methodologies to ensure safe and efficient installation under live conditions.

OUTCOME & BENEFITS

The project was completed on time and within budget, meeting all security and safety standards set by the Welsh Government and airbase authorities. The newly installed fencing enhances the airbase’s perimeter security, reducing the risk of unauthorized access while maintaining operational efficiency.
