CASE STUDY: CORN MILL BRIDGE
Client: AXA Insurance Location: Corn Mill Bridge Replacement: Storm Damage Recovery
Project Overview
Ridgeway Contractors Ltd was commissioned by AXA Insurance to replace Corn Mill Bridge, which had suffered severe storm damage. This project required a highly specialised approach due to its location over a live watercourse and the presence of essential gas, water, and foul services running through the bridge structure.
CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS
Working in a running watercourse presented significant challenges, requiring ecological reports, local authority watercourse consent, and planning approval. Ridgeway Contractors Ltd worked closely with regulatory bodies to ensure all legal and environmental obligations were met.
To prevent debris from entering the river, a scaffolding platform was installed on both sides and underneath the bridge, enabling a controlled demolition process. The old stone bridge was carefully dismantled by hand to avoid contamination of the watercourse. With vital gas, water, and foul drainage services encased within a cast-iron pipe in the bridge deck, extreme care was taken to preserve uninterrupted service for residents.
Once the old structure was safely removed, the site was excavated, and reinforced foundations were cast. Using a pre-designed shuttering system, reinforcing cages were installed and concreted to create a robust support structure. RSJ beams were then secured, followed by the installation of a preformed corrugated steel floor to act as a structural base. Finally, a reinforcing mesh was laid, and concrete was pumped to create the finished bridge deck.
FINAL WORKS & FINISHING TOUCHES
To ensure a safe and accessible final structure, the project was completed with:

New paving, improving pedestrian access and enhancing the durability of the bridge approach.

High-quality tarmac surfacing, providing a smooth and long-lasting roadway for vehicles.

Security fencing and gates, ensuring controlled access and protecting the bridge from unauthorised use.

These finishing touches not only improved the functionality and safety of the bridge but also contributed to the overall aesthetic and structural integrity of the surrounding area.
OUTCOME
The project was successfully completed on time and within budget, fully restoring access for local residents. Through careful planning and precise execution, Ridgeway Contractors Ltd ensured that the watercourse remained uncontaminated, and essential utility services remained operational throughout the construction process.
